The mayor, Inés Rey, supervised today the commissioning of the two new elevators enabled by the City Council between Pintor Villar Chao and Juan Montes streets, with the aim of improving accessibility between the neighborhoods of Gaiteira, Castrillón, and Os Castros.
Until now, this pedestrian route only had a staircase. This forced «people with reduced mobility or in wheelchairs to detour and make detours to reach, for example, Oza Avenue,» as the mayor recalled this morning, accompanied by the councilor for Infrastructure and Mobility, Noemí Díaz.
With the completion of this intervention, co-financed with European Next Generation funds, the area gains in accessibility, shortening routes in a very particular district in terms of geography and urban configuration, both for its density and its slopes. «To this we add the population pyramid of the district. Many elderly people live here. For this reason, we will assess and study future actions to improve universal accessibility in the neighborhood,» the mayor said.
Both the president of the Federation of Neighborhood Associations of A Coruña and the Metropolitan Area, Luisa Varela, and the president of the Oza-Gaiteira-Os Castros neighborhood association, Paulo Sexto, positively evaluated this action. «Our association has always aimed to improve vertical mobility and eliminate architectural barriers in our neighborhood. From our collective, we will continue to support everything that entails these improvements,» Sexto expressed, thanking the municipal government for the new infrastructure that entered into operation today.
In recent months, the City Council renovated and adapted eight bus stops in the neighborhood
The accessibility improvements carried out in recent months in the triangle formed by the neighborhoods of Gaiteira, Os Castros, and Castrillón were also reflected in the remodeling and adaptation of urban transport stops.
In this sense, the City Council obtained funds to improve 16 bus stops throughout the city. Of these 16, half of the interventions were concentrated in this sector, with interventions on Curtis, Vicente Aleixandre, Abegondo, José María Hernansáez streets, the Concordia and Pablo Iglesias squares, and also at two stops on Concordia Avenue.
Necessary accessibility actions were carried out at all of them, expanding the available pedestrian surface and enabling differentiated pavements that are essential for people with reduced mobility or visibility.
In addition, key actions are progressing such as the urbanization of José María Hernansáez
Also this morning, Inés Rey highlighted the progress made over the past year to unblock fundamental projects for the neighborhood, such as the urbanization of José María Hernansáez square, where the City Council will invest one million euros to improve this space after reaching consensus with the residents on the planned actions.
In March, the remodeling project was presented to the neighborhood, and in June, after considering the contributions and suggestions of the residents, the works were put out to tender. In this way, José María Hernansáez will be configured as a pedestrian square with new paths and accessible leisure areas. Green areas will be reorganized, and the water collection network will be renewed. In addition, road safety in the surrounding area will be strengthened, and access for emergency vehicles will be improved.
