
The youth employment rate stands at 38.3% and the unemployment rate in this group is 18.3%
Unemployment rose by 1,600 people between January and March in Galicia, representing a 1.5% increase compared to the previous quarter, while employment decreased by 3,200 people (-0.28%), according to data released on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
Thus, according to the Active Population Survey (EPA), the number of unemployed individuals in the Galician community stands at 111,000 at the end of the first quarter, with employment decreasing to 1,150,100 people.
The unemployment rate increased by 0.1 points to 8.8%, while the employment rate decreased compared to the previous quarter to 48.3%.
In any case, in year-on-year variation, the total number of unemployed individuals in Galicia decreased by 20,600 people (15.7%).
In terms of gender, compared to the previous quarter, male unemployment increased while female unemployment decreased. The number of unemployed men is 52,700 (4,000 more than three months ago) and the number of unemployed women is 58,200 (2,500 less).
Therefore, the male unemployment rate stands at 8.2% and the female unemployment rate at 9.4%.
EMPLOYED
In the last 12 months, the number of employed individuals increased by 22,400 people, representing a 2% increase.
By gender, male employment decreased by 8,800 people this quarter compared to the fourth quarter, while female employment saw an increase of 5,700 people.
Looking at economic activity sectors, employment decreased in the primary sector, construction, and services this quarter, while it increased in the industry sector.
In the primary sector, the decrease amounted to 4,300 workers, 2,700 in construction, and 1,100 in services. In the industry sector, there was an increase of 5,100 people.
In Galicia, there were 940,100 salaried workers in the first quarter, 811,300 with permanent contracts and the remaining 128,800 with temporary contracts. In terms of quarterly evolution, there were 13,900 more permanent contracts and 22,000 fewer temporary contracts.
The temporary employment rate, calculated as the percentage of people with temporary contracts out of the total number of salaried workers, reached 13.7%.
YOUNG PEOPLE
Out of the 336,700 young people aged between 16 and 29, 129,000 (38.3%) are employed, 28,900 (8.6%) are unemployed, and the remaining 178,800 (53.1%) are inactive.
The employment rate in this group stands at 38.3% and the youth unemployment rate at 18.3%. 73.6% of employed individuals aged between 16 and 29 work full-time, with 73.6% being linked to the company through a permanent contract.
In this group, the temporary employment rate is 26.4%.
ACTIVE POPULATION
In the first quarter, the Galician population aged 16 and over reached 2,381,000 people, of which 1,261,100 are classified as active, resulting in an activity rate of 53%.
The male activity rate decreased by 0.5 points compared to the figure recorded three months ago (down to 56.2%), while the female activity rate experienced a positive variation up to 50%.
