Alfonso Rueda insists that Galicia «will never refuse to welcome» migrant minors, but asks for planning and funding
The President of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, announced on Monday that the regional government will increase the monthly allowances received by foster families in Galicia starting May 1st.
According to a press release, this represents an additional investment of over 900,000 euros by the Xunta.
«Galicia is already the second community with the best family reception ratios, as more than 60% of minors in the protection system live temporarily with families, compared to 40% residing in residential facilities,» Rueda emphasized.
With this increase in allowances, the President detailed that families hosting children aged 3 to 18 will see their allowances increased by 75 euros per month, bringing the total contribution to 425 euros.
For families with children aged one to three years, the increase will be 25 euros per month, also totaling 425 euros per month.
Lastly, the contribution for foster units hosting babies under one year old remains at 600 euros.
PLANNED AND FINANCED MIGRANT RECEPTION
Asked about the late Pope Francis’ advocacy for the reception of migrant minors, the leader of the regional government affirmed that this is the path followed by the Galician community.
«You will not have heard me or anyone in my government say anything other than Galicia must be a welcoming land, as it was once a land in need of welcome in the places where people had to emigrate,» Rueda stated.
Therefore, he continued, they insist so much on the need for this process to be carried out in an «orderly and planned» manner.
«Galicia will never refuse to welcome immigrants, especially unaccompanied minors, as long as it is done in a planned manner because, otherwise, it is impossible. Planned and funded,» he affirmed.
MAINTENANCE OF GENDER VIOLENCE VICTIM CENTERS
On another note, the Xunta’s Consello has agreed to «secure» the maintenance of the domestic violence victim care centers in A Coruña and Ferrol with around 300,000 euros.
Thus, it has approved two collaboration agreements between the Department of Social Policy and Equality and the city councils of A Coruña and Ferrol for the maintenance of these centers.
In total, the Xunta allocates nearly 300,000 euros for these two agreements, almost 150,000 euros for each city.
The aim of the agreements is to «ensure a safe and comfortable accommodation for the female victims who receive assistance in these facilities that are part of the Galician Care Network».
Thanks to this investment, it is expected to be able to assist over 100 female victims and their children in each of the centers. Additionally, with these new agreements, the provision of this service is secured for the next three years, as it is the first time that this agreement has been signed for multiple years.
