The examination of mobile phones linked one of the alleged perpetrators in both cases.
The two alleged perpetrators of the murder of José Luis Alvarado, a 33-year-old man of Dominican nationality, which occurred at the Castro de Carballo bar (A Coruña) on December 4, 2024, and who were arrested in Madrid and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona), are related to the execution of the owner of a bar in the Poble-sec neighborhood in the Catalan capital in December 2023, confirmed sources from the Mossos d’Esquadra to Europa Press.
As reported by ‘El Periódico’, the examination of the mobile phones confirmed that in the case of the detainee in Madrid, he could be involved in the crime in Carballo, and the modus operandi in both cases was similar, as the alleged hitman would enter the premises and shoot with his firearm.
On the other hand, the coincidence of actions and the Dominican nationality of the victim and suspects led the Mossos to send this information to the Civil Guard, which incorporated it into the investigation opened for the crime.
Furthermore, the suspects arrested in these operations for settling scores in both Barcelona and Carballo have a history of committing murder offenses in the Dominican Republic with a very similar modus operandi: shooting the target in a cold manner and quickly escaping almost without a trace.
They also had great mobility to travel to different countries, both in South America and Europe, to commit commissioned crimes.
ARRESTS IN MADRID AND L’HOSPITALET
Once the incriminating evidence was obtained, a simultaneous operation was designed for the arrest of both suspects in their respective places of residence, one in L’Hospitalet and the other in Madrid.
In L’Hospitalet, agents of the Judicial Police Unit of the Civil Guard in Catalonia, with the support of Mossos d’Esquadra from the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) of the Metropolitan Barcelona Police Region, carried out the arrest of the first suspect without incidents.
In Madrid, the arrest of the second suspect required more thorough planning, due to his alleged dangerousness and suspicion of carrying weapons, and under the protection of the corresponding judicial authorization, the Special Intervention Unit (UEI) of the Civil Guard –an elite unit specialized in high-risk interventions– proceeded to enter the residence.
SETTLING SCORES
The main hypothesis considered from the beginning was that of settling scores, given the circumstances surrounding the case and especially the way the attack was carried out, and the Civil Guard confirmed that this crime allegedly occurred in relation to events that took place outside of Galicia.
Precisely, the Carballo crime quickly spread to various social networks from the beginning, where profiles from the deceased’s country of origin indicated that in the past, he had been linked to organized crime groups.
Finally, the two suspects, aged 33 and 29, were remanded in provisional custody on May 3 after being brought before the Court of Instruction number 2 in the capital of Bergantiños.
