This morning, the Plenary unanimously approved the change of use of the municipal plot that currently houses the Palavea market. As specified by the Councilor for Economy and Strategic Planning, and spokesperson for the municipal government, José Manuel Lage, it will be classified as a cultural facility.
Lage announced today that this measure represents «the first necessary step to carry out the construction of Palavea’s first public library, as well as its first computer room.» The councilor explained that over the years, and also due to the presence of a large commercial area nearby, «the Palavea market has been losing activity,» with most of the stalls empty.
«Now, the Inés Rey government has decided to reverse this situation by taking advantage of existing resources. In this way, we proposed a change of use to allow the market to transition from a food market to a cultural facility,» Lage specified, adding that the municipal government’s intention is to immediately tender the drafting of the detailed study and the project «so that the community can enjoy a new cultural infrastructure on the horizon for the years 2027-2028.»
In this regard, Lage specified that the project for the new municipal library of Palavea will be completed before the end of 2025, the tender will take place in the first quarter of 2026, and the forecast is for it to be completed between 2027 and 2028.
The demolition of the walls of the Observatory Park will be tendered this month, when the preparation of the 2026 Budgets will also begin
Also this morning, in the municipal plenary session, José Manuel Lage announced that the preparation of the Municipal Budgets for the coming year, 2026, will start this month. For this, the City Council will approve an instruction this month that will be sent to all services.
Lage also announced that this same month of July, the demolition of the walls that will pave the way for the creation of the Observatory Park will be tendered, after the City Council obtained the concession of the land from the State last June.
Approval of the Economic and Social Council regulations
In another order of business, today the initial approval of the regulations of the Economic and Social Council of the city of A Coruña was passed, a body that received the green light from the Government Board earlier this month.
José Manuel Lage pointed out that there will be a period of 30 working days to collect possible allegations or suggestions from the public, which will contribute to the improvement of the text.
«The Inés Rey government sees open, plural, and participatory processes as part of its essence. We believe that institutions should be open to the public, giving them a voice through various methods, including the creation of permanent advisory bodies with maximum social representation. This, and nothing else, is the Economic and Social Council, a body with an internal structure called to give voice to the social and productive fabric of the city. This was also a commitment made to the BNG, another commitment that we are now fulfilling,» explained Lage.
Lage pointed out that, as an advisory and opinion-emitting body, the Economic and Social Council of A Coruña is called to be a permanent interlocutor of governments to assess all those relevant issues of public interest, «having as objectives, among others, to assess strategic planning instruments and other matters of special importance for socio-economic development.»
